Stonechurch Winery was the site of the first ever Nia Jam in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Saturday May 5th over 60 people gathered from all over Ontario to dance together in a candle light setting. Led alternately by 10 gifted teachers this occasion was a special experience.

Nia is described as a sensory based movement practice that leads to health, wellness and fitness. It combines martial arts, healing arts and dance to integrate the body, mind and spirit. Participants speak about being energized, deeply relaxed and blessed with a general sense of well being. Moving together in unison with the group lends a feeling of belonging.

Nia draws on a variety of moves and concepts including Aikido, Tai Chi, yoga, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique and jazz dance. There are 52 moves of Nia but they are all subject to interpretation. There is no wrong way to do Nia. It is easy to learn and can be adapted to people who are new to exercise as well as those who are more athletic.

The Niagara-on-the-Lake group led by black belt instructor Didi Wilson organized the event. After the dance a dinner and wine was provided for dancers and their guests.

Response has been so overwhelmingly positive that plans are already in motion for next year’s event.

Attention avid golfers! A club fitting course is now available in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Beginners, professionals, and all skill levels have experienced immediate improvements using properly fitted custom clubs. This is an opportunity to learn how to properly fit and build custom golf clubs for fun or profit.

In response to the explosive world wide popularity in custom fitting a local company, Unison Golf, has developed a graduated training system to teach the skills of precision custom club building. The course is a 2 stage program. First is a one day workshop to introduce the basics of club fitting and students build 2 of their own clubs. Those wishing to achieve certification can apply for the advanced course which is a personal 3 day hands-on program where they learn the secrets of expert golf club fitting. Unison has been fitting all levels of players including touring professionals for over 20 years.

Secret Sauce

Working closely with professional golfers company founder Russ Hodgkinson developed a unique formula that perfectly matches the exact club frequency requirement to an individual’s swing and tempo. This complex formula is the engine of the Proprietary Frequency Analyser Software. After performing a few simple tests, and entering the data into the PFA Software, the program generates precise frequency calculations for each club. Unison is sharing this proprietary technology with graduates of the 3 day course who are members of the Certified Fitters Club. Members enjoy special discount pricing and on-line access to the exclusive PFA Software.

A limited number of classes are available now on a first-come first-served basis at:
Unison Golf

When we first moved to what we thought would be our “weekend get-away” in NOTL back in 1994 we had no idea how it would change our lives. I started playing with my Toronto musician friends, Eric Mahar and Dave Norris at local haunts like The Angel, The Anchorage, etc and was dubiously dubbed a “fringe local”. While we only perform as the Fringe Locals from time to time now, we’ve had some really great years as an ever expanding and contracting co-operative kind of jam band with lots of great Niagara region and Toronto musicians adding to the musical madness. Over the years we’ve released 4 indie CD’s. It’s always great when we can get back together for a night and revisit some old and new songs.

Terry Edmunds, the “Wildchild” is a blues-rock guitarist from Cape Breton who joined the Mingelwood Band in 1975 at the age of 17. In the 80′s he was in the Dutch Mason Blues Band. Since then he’s toured Canada numerous times and was quite active in the Vancouver music scene from 1986 to 2002. He now resides in Brantford. I had the pleasure of playing with him for the first time last year at the Duck and he blew me away. Can’t wait to hear him this Sat with the NRS!
